No top brass of ANC in NC on step-aside list─── LUCKY NKUYANE 10:36 Fri, 16 Apr 2021
The ANC in the Northern Cape is expected to release a statement later today regarding the controversial step-aside list.
The list follows a resolution by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) that party members who are facing charges must step aside within 30 days. Provinces were then asked to submit a list with the names of these party members to the office of the ANC Secretary-General, Ace Magashule.
Early indications are that no top brass of the ANC in the Northern Cape are mentioned on the list. OFM News understands that the party in that province did comply with the NEC's request that all nine provinces should send a list of party members facing criminal charges in a court of law.
However, as per the 54th National General Election's resolutions, the Secretary-General (SG) Ace Magashule extended the scope and also asked for party members, alleged, reported or even implicated to also be included on the list. The provinces had until Thursday 15 April to comply and send the list.
On Thursday, the Northern Cape provincial spokesperson of the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC), Tshepo Louw, told OFM News that officials were busy yesterday updating the list as per the request of Magashule. Louw said they were expected to meet with these party deployees, who have been affected by the 2017 ANC NGC resolutions.
Louw could not deliberate on the number of officials that could be affected by the party resolution.
In his letter sent to ANC members earlier, Magashule - who has until 28 April to step aside or face suspension from the party - said the National Executive Committee (NEC) reaffirmed the resolutions of the 54th national elections on fighting crime and corruption and on credibility and integrity.
Earlier, ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the ANC's NEC had recommended that those facing criminal charges in a court of law must step aside or face suspension.
Magashule is embroiled in a number of corruption cases involving the Free State, with the controversial R255 million worth asbestos deal being the latest to make news. Following his appearance before the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court in February, Magashule and his co-accused are expected to appear in the Free State High Court on August 11, facing fraud and corruption charges relating to the project.
