Setsoto expected to elect new mayor─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 11:03 Sun, 18 Apr 2021
The Setsoto Local Municipality in the Free State is soon expected to hold a council sitting to elect its new mayor.
This, as mayor Komane Koalane was removed from office through a motion of no confidence last week.
The motion to have Koalane removed was brought by the United Front of Civics (UFC) and supported by other opposition parties in the council.
Following Koalane’s ousting, the new mayor of the municipality could not be elected as ANC members left the chambers and a quorum could not be formed. The DA in the municipality and the UFC are now calling for an urgent Council sitting this week to see the election of the new mayor.
The parties allege that Koalane was responsible for the municipality’s failure and his successor should be someone who is going to prioritise communities.
The municipality, serving the communities of Ficksburg and Senekal, amongst others, is said to only be at 43% revenue collection and amongst Free State municipalities battling to eradicate bucket toilets, amongst other necessities.
