Despite suffering from the impact that the Covid-19 pandemic has on the arts and culture industry, local Bloemfontein bass guitarist, Sihle Zulu, is set on making a difference.

Zulu says the national lockdown has hurt him financially and he had to come up with another plan to make money. Subsequently to this, he came up with online bass guitar lessons.

He says once more people have been vaccinated, he will start face-to-face classes focused on children in townships. This will also get them off the streets. Although his online lessons are progressing, Zulu says it is still very difficult being an artist during a pandemic.

“It’s been very difficult, getting help from friends and family. Most sectors are operational and can do business and work, but for us, we’re still closed down. Something I’m very passionate about, is youth development. I'm also looking at going into the location and getting children out of the streets by introducing them to music,” Zulu adds.

He says Covid-19 has also been a psychological barrier financially - having to depend on others. “I’m sitting indoors doing nothing, and then I decided why not teach people online,” he says. Zulu further adds that some of his clients are also struggling financially and can’t always pay on time, adding to his financial strain.

His passion for music, however, overshadows his own needs sometimes.
