ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed concern over the political sphere in the Free State.

Delivering closing remarks following this weekend's National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, Ramaphosa announced that they have noted the ongoing instability in the province and the ANC vs Ramakatsa case with deep concerns.

He confirmed more efforts need to be taken to "find a political solution" in the Free State and bring unity. He announced the party's NWC has been mandated to establish an inclusive interim structure that will take the province to an elective conference in due course.

Ramaphosa's statement comes weeks after the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) has set aside and declared the ANC's provincial conference which was held in May 2018 as unconstitutional and unlawful.

The conference, which saw the current MEC of Police, Roads, and Transport, Sam Mashinini, being elected as the chairperson of the party and Agriculture MEC, William Bulwane, as his deputy, has for years drawn controversy with some ANC members stating that it must be nullified as the Branch General Meetings (BGMs) held prior to the provincial conference were illegally constituted.

The SCA in April said the provincial conference was held in violation of a court order of 29 November 2017.

Meanwhile, Ramaphosa has confirmed the NEC has been discussing several issues including the state of the organisation in the different provinces, the step-aside resolution, the position of the Secretary-General Ace Magashule, as well as the upcoming local government elections.
