#GBV in FS in sharp focus at SAPS/NPA indaba | News Article

The scourge of gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide in the Free State will be focused on over the next two days as law enforcement in the province convenes for a GBV-centered indaba.

The spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in the Free State, Phaladi Shuping, tells OFM News the indaba which is taking place at Bobbies Park on the 12 and 13th of May, will be attended by the Free State Director of Public Prosecutions, Navilla Somaru, and Provincial Police Commissioner, Baile Motswenyane. According to the programme, the first day will see a breakdown of statistical data and GBV hotspots in the province, as well as strategies that are being developed to mitigate the problem.

This gathering comes after the EFF in the Free State raised their concerns over the issue with the party’s provincial chairperson, Mandisa Makesini, saying they have noticed that the province features prominently on the police ministry's red flag crime statistics. She said these incidents have been experienced mainly in three different areas in the province which includes Matjhabeng in Welkom, Botshabelo, and Qwaqwa amongst others.

Makesini also criticised police and the NPA for allegedly failing to put more effort to curb the scourge.

The EFF was at the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court on Tuesday to attend the latest court appearance of McKenzie Ratselane, who is the estranged husband of the Lesedi FM presenter Dimakatso. Ratselane is facing multiple charges, including kidnapping, assault, and attempted murder after he was arrested in Gauteng for allegedly attacking and stabbing his wife multiple times in Bloemfontein.
