'Infrastructure theft a cause for concern'─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 12:19 Wed, 12 May 2021
The Department of Human Settlements, Water, and Sanitation confirms it makes use of several security services to safeguard offices and assets in provincial offices.
Minister Lindiwe Sisulu says in some cases security services are used to protect infrastructure that is vulnerable to vandalism and theft. She, in a written reply in Parliament, indicates over R103 million is set aside for the North West, R42 million for the Northern Cape, and R28 million for the Free State, amongst other provinces. Sisulu says they have entered into three-year contracts with most security companies to ensure that they render services to provinces. Whilst the value and duration of each contract in the different provinces varies, Sisulu indicates that more still needs to be done to safeguard infrastructure.
OFM News has previously reported about how the vandalism of water infrastructure has made news in the Free State’s Matjhabeng Municipality with the local municipality calling on residents to report acts of theft and vandalism after communities had to endure water shortages and sewage spillages following suspected cases of theft.
Municipal spokesperson, Kgojane Matutle, has told OFM News that the sewerage crisis in Matjhabeng is exacerbated by vandalism and sabotage to sewerage plants and networks.
