Flood-affected roads in the North West are set to get a facelift as the provincial government set aside over R250 million.

According to the MEC for Cooperative Governance, Mmoloki Cwaile, the North West had made rescue plans to provide relief to different areas which were heavily affected. He says the province has compiled a report on the damaged roads in Kgetleng River, Taung, and Lekwa Teeman municipalities, amongst others, and about R262,52 million has been set aside to address the damaged roads and infrastructure.

Cwaile says the Department of Public Works has been tasked to fix all the damaged roads and infrastructure in the province following the heavy rains in February 2021.

“We have said the departments and municipalities must repurpose their budgets and we have increased the allocation of Public Works to fix all the roads,” he adds.

At least six municipalities have requested assistance from the provincial government. According to a statement by premier Job Mokgoro, these municipalities include the Greater Taung Local Municipality, which requested R19 million to attend to 16km of damaged road infrastructure of five villages.

Naledi Local Municipality has requested R4,39 million for the regraveling and resealing of 9,4km of damaged roads in six villages, while the Mahikeng Local Municipality needs about R70 million for the re-patching and resealing of internal roads, as well as the reconstruction of the stormwater drainage system and the regraveling of roads in various villages.

The Lekwa Teemane Local Municipality has requested R4,5 million for the road and stormwater infrastructure in Christiana, in the vicinity of the Christiana School of the Blind and the hospital.
