#MangaungShutdown death: Security guard on bail, charge changed to culpable homicide─── LUCKY NKUYANE 15:19 Wed, 19 May 2021
The charge against the Bloemfontein security guard accused of the murder of the 14-year-old school pupil, Liam Siegal, during protests has been changed to culpable homicide in the Magistrate's Court on Wednesday and he was released on R1000 bail.
The National Prosecuting Authority's (NPA) provincial spokesperson, Phaladi Shuping, says the accused was released on bail, which the state did not oppose.
He says the 57-year-old security guard will re-appear in the same court on 9 June 2021. The accused allegedly shot and killed Siegal on Monday during the Mangaung protests which rocked parts of Bloemfontein. The scholar of the Heide Primary School in Heidedal passed away on the scene of the crime after the fatal shooting.
It's alleged that a group of protesters wanted to enter a warehouse in Dr Belcher Road, and the security guard fired a shot at them in an attempt to scare them away but he, unfortunately, hit Siegal. He appeared for the first time on Wednesday since his arrest Monday after the fatal shooting incident.
Residents in Bloemfontein have been complaining about the lack of service delivery and corruption, amongst others.
The Mangaung Shutdown protest has completely shut down Bloemfontein with businesses and schools brought to a halt.
