The police recovered 153kg of copper cables in the Northern Cape after an arrest following a tip-off.
A 27-year-old suspect is expected to appear in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court after the alleged copper theft. A case of tampering with infrastructure has been opened against him.
He was arrested on Wednesday 19 May 2021 after Sergeant Baard, who is stationed at Kimberley Social Crime Prevention, received a tipoff about people who were burning copper cables at Samaria Shanties.
The police officer acted immediately on the tip-off with the help of the sector manager of Samaria, Sgt Qashu, and other police officers.
On their arrival, they saw three suspects around the fire, who immediately ran when they saw the police approaching. The police managed to arrest one male suspect, who claimed to be a 27-year-old.
It is alleged that the police found copper cables weighing 153kg, valued at approximately R11 400.
