#CoronavirusNC: Increasing #Covid19 cases affects schools─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 11:42 Sun, 23 May 2021
The Northern Cape Education Department is appealing to school communities to adhere to the coronavirus (Covid-19) protocols.
This, as positive cases in the province continue to escalate.
The department confirms there has been a sharp increase in Covid-19 cases at schools during the past week - with 163 new positive cases having been recorded.
Spokesperson Geoffrey van der Merwe says this leads to the sporadic closure and reopening of schools, which ultimately has a negative effect on teaching and learning.
He confirms 49 schools have been closed since May 1, and that 14 of these are still closed.
According to Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, the province currently has 7 374 active cases, making it the second province with the highest active cases next to Gauteng.
Whilst the majority of schools in the province are set to open tomorrow, Van der Merwe urges schools and the broader society to uphold Covid-19 regulations at all times.
“Our schools are a microcosm of society, and therefore what transpires in our communities will have a direct impact on our schools and the education of our children. We value the lives of educators, learners and support staff at schools and therefore we will continue to strengthen our support to all our schools during the pandemic,” he added.
