Interventions in drought-plagued NC─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 07:21 Tue, 25 May 2021
Drought relief initiatives and water challenges experienced in the Northern Cape are receiving all the necessary attention.
This is according to the Minister of Water and Sanitation, Lindiwe Sisulu. She engaged with the mining and agriculture sectors as well as municipalities in the province on Monday during her visit to the province.
She announced that refurbishment of existing infrastructure, drilling of boreholes, water tanks, and the implementation of new infrastructure in the various drought-affected local municipalities are high priority.
Sisulu said a programme consisting of water infrastructure projects that will provide over 50 borehole systems across five municipalities to assist about 750 farmers is underway.
Spokesperson, Amogelang Moholoeng, in a statement confirms Sisulu also launched the Vaal Gamagara Bulk Water Project, which is set to further address water challenges faced in the province and create job opportunities for locals.
OFM News previously reported that the province is amongst those that have for years been hard-hit by drought and faced several water challenges.
Premier Zamani Saul has expressed gratitude for these water interventions and extended his gratitude to the province’s mining and agricultural sectors which are said to be contributing about 35% towards the province's GDP.
