NW municipal woes in spotlight─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 07:05 Tue, 01 Jun 2021
The state of North West municipalities is expected to come into the spotlight today.
This, as the MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, Mmoloki Cwaile, is expected to table the 2021/22 budget.
Cwaile's much-anticipated speech before the Provincial Legislature will come just days after sporadic service delivery protests in the province's capital city.
Residents last week took to the streets to express their dissatisfaction with poor municipal services in Mahikeng and neighbouring towns. The lack of sustainable water supply, lack of job opportunities and corruption allegations are amongst issues they wanted the provincial government to address.
Cwaile's 2021/22 financial budget will also come amidst growing concerns over municipalities under administration, not showing much improvement.
With more than half of the municipalities in the province under administration, the Auditor-General's latest report indicates that most are still crippled by their investment in the now liquidated VBS Mutual Bank.
Cwaile, presenting his department's budget this morning, is expected to outline his plan of action and how his department plans to redress municipal woes.
