Shoplifting case of North West NPA boss to be led by Limpopo prosecutor | News Article

A Limpopo prosecutor has been appointed to lead the case against a North West senior prosecutor arrested for shoplifting.

News24 reports the suspended North West National Prosecuting Authority's (NPA) regional head of the Special Commercial Crimes Unit, Jeanette Neveling, 53, appeared in the Mmabatho District Court on Tuesday. Neveling is out on R500 bail. She faces a charge of shoplifting.

On 16 February, Neveling allegedly stole food and clothing items, valued at approximately R3 000, at a retail shop at The Crossing Shopping Mall in Mahikeng.

NPA North West spokesperson, Henry Mamothane, said Neveling appeared in court, without her lawyer.

Mamothane said her previous lawyer withdrew from the case.

"Neveling was also presented with a copy of the docket and video footage gathered by the investigating officer. The State has appointed a prosecutor from Limpopo to prosecute the matter to avoid conflict of interest or any perceived bias.

"We also requested that a senior magistrate, from an outside jurisdiction, preside over the matter to avoid any conflict of interest or perceived bias," said Mamothane.

The case has been postponed until 2 August.
