NW among feeding scheme beneficiaries─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 06:15 Thu, 03 Jun 2021
The North West is amongst the provinces that have been paid a substantial amount of money towards school feeding schemes.
According to Education Minister, Angie Motshekga, this province has been allocated over R500 000 in the 2020/21 financial year.
Responding to parliamentary questions about budget allocations for the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP), Motshekga said the allocation of NSNP funds to provinces are based on poverty levels experienced in each province. This is coupled with the number of learners in no-fee schools.
Motshekga has further indicated that provinces such as KwaZulu Natal, Limpopo and Eastern Cape, with high levels of poverty, receive the largest share of the NSNP grant allocation.
OFM News has previously reported on how the school feeding scheme made national headlines during the Covid-19 hard lockdown, with education unions and lobby groups stating that the closure of schools had left millions of children without any food.
Following several court battles with Section 27 and Equal Education, Motshekga announced that learners would be provided with daily food despite the closure of schools or rotation of classes.
The province receiving the least amount of money for feeding schemes is the Northern Cape.
