Poor services in NW a cause for concern─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 11:27 Mon, 07 Jun 2021
Housing backlogs and the poor state of roads in the North West have come into the spotlight.
With more than 620 villages and more than 300 informal settlements, the provincial Human Settlements Department has confirmed there are several housing challenges and backlogs in the province.
Accounting before the NCOP Ad Hoc Committee focused on the section 100 intervention in the North West, Head of the Department Neo Sephoti said they have noted housing projects where contractors have left the projects incomplete and they are addressing the matter.
Public Works MEC, Gaoage Molapisi, added that they are currently attending to road maintenance projects in several districts. He said many have been destroyed by floods that also displaced many families at the beginning of the year and are attending to them. He alluded that they will be providing a detailed report before the House within 14 days, outlining all projects underway and those completed.
The two departments are amongst those accounting before the NCOP over the state of service delivery in the North West.
The NCOP Ad Hoc Committee, led by Chairperson China Dodovu, is on Monday engaging the provincial government on the poor state of municipalities and lack of service delivery by the departments.
Dodovu has outlined that there are several projects where millions are unaccounted for, where police stations are not well equipped and schools incomplete. This, coupled with several municipal woes and their inability to provide basic services, such as water.
He said the provincial government has to account for all issues brought before them.
