NC Coghsta MEC concerned as local elections edge nearer | News Article

The MEC of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements, and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta), Bentley Vass, has requested an urgent meeting with municipalities that performed badly in the Northern Cape Province.

This comes after the MEC held a virtual meeting on Wednesday 9 June 2021 with municipalities. Vass said the Premier of the Northern Cape, Zamani Saul, and the MEC responsible for Finance, Economic Development and Tourism, Abram Vosloo, have invited all municipalities that have performed poorly and also those that have regressed.

This summons comes after Vass raised an issue of serious socio-economic challenges which the pandemic has presented. He said that municipalities are on the receiving end, as people are looking for answers and end up releasing their frustration on local municipalities. He stated that their objective is not to lament or complain, but rather give hope to the voters. The statement was followed with a reminder of the upcoming local government elections, which is four months away.

Vass reiterated that the forum has to meet and discuss all matters that relate to the current state of Northern Cape municipalities and also look into all agenda items that are about local government elections.
