The EFF in the Free State has called on the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development(doj & cd) "to insource security officers at courts across the province, who are employed by one single private security company".

This after it emerged that a large number of security officers at courts across Bloemfontein and surrounding areas are in limbo as the new security company is failing to pay them the agreed amount of R5 200 and only pays them a minimum wage of R3 500.

EFF’s provincial chairperson, Mandisa Makesini, says they are aware that officers at the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court and High Court, amongst others, are allegedly being exploited by the company.

OFM News was told the new company, which took over the operations in March, failed to pay workers for that month and only paid them a minimum wage in April. Makesini says they want the department to abolish the tender system and insource these security officers. The department has noted OFM News’ inquiry.

According to security guards who spoke to OFM News on the basis of anonymity, this company reneged from paying them R5 200 as promised. It only said employees will be paid according to the Government Gazette later on, but to date, this is yet to happen. Workers also alleged that they have been working without contracts and only on a gentlemen’s agreement. Makesini says the party will conduct to fight for the rights of the security officers who are allegedly exploited by security companies.
