State of water boards a cause for concern - Sisulu─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 12:45 Fri, 11 Jun 2021
Bloem Water, supplying bulk water to the troubled Mangaung Metro Municipality, is amongst the water boards currently under investigation for irregular expenditure.
A report by the Water and Sanitation Department indicates that the water board is under investigation for irregular expenditure amounting to over R4.1 million. The report tabled before Parliament by Minister Lindiwe Sisulu indicates the irregular expenditure was raised in the 2019/20 financial year and that investigations regarding the R4.7 million incurred in the previous year (during the 2018/19 financial year) has been referred to Treasury.
Sisulu said non-compliance with supply chain processes is a major concern across water boards. Her report also indicates non-payment for bulk water supply by municipalities is another great cause of concern having negative implications on their operations.
Sisulu has cautioned municipalities to pay water boards for services, stating that the money lost through non-payment by municipalities stood at R12.6 billion as of March this year. She added they will ensure those responsible for unauthorised, irregular expenditure are held accountable.
