The Free State Legislature says it is concerned after employees took to the streets to express their grievances despite ongoing talks to address their issues.

Spokesperson, Life Mokone, in response to OFM News’ inquiry following a demonstration by employees at the Southern Life Plaza Building in Bloemfontein, says there are discussions between the union and the management over challenges plaguing employees.

He says they “find it premature that the union decided to break ranks from these talks and headed to the streets”. A number of employees on Friday expressed their dissatisfaction stating that their working conditions have become unbearable.

Represented by Nehawu, the group told OFM News maladministration, corruption and nepotism have become the order of the day and  they have also called for Speaker, Zanele Sifuba, to vacate office.

It is alleged those with high rank political connections are appointed in positions without following due recruitment procedures. This, coupled with poor working conditions and a lack of consultation with stakeholders involved. Whilst Mokone could not respond to OFM News’ question about the allegations brought forth, he said they will continue to engage the union on several issues to ensure they “create a peaceful working relationship”.

OFM News has reported that the employees have vowed to continue picketing in front of their offices until their demands are met, and that there is a plan to embark on a "full-blown industrial action" should their call fall on deaf ears.
