Lesotho Consul General Selimo Thabane on Tuesday morning confirmed to OFM News that the 11 bodies of alleged zama-zamas or illegal miners, that were found dumped on the side of the road near Orkney in North West, are Lesotho nationals.

This leaves about ten unidentified bodies. Eight were positively identified by their families on Monday at the Tshepong Hospital Mortuary. North West police have released the names of the victims.

Police spokesperson, Adéle Myburgh, told OFM News that at least three other families are expected to come through for identifications on Tuesday.

One family is from Mozambique.

Myburgh appealed to communities to come forward with identifying the remaining bodies.

General Thabane said the bodies of Lesotho nationals are expected to be repatriated by the end of the week.

Myburgh confirmed that DNA samples will also be used to track families of the deceased.
