Qwaqwa hawkers won’t budge─── 17:37 Thu, 24 Jun 2021
Qwaqwa hawkers in the Free State have made it clear that they won't vacate their spots at the Setsing Shopping Centre.
This follows municipal instructions that they must vacate the area to allow development projects at the centre to commence.
Speaking to OFM News, a representative for the hawkers - Motlatsi Rapetsoa - said their strike will continue until the Maluti-A-Phofung Local Municipality listens to their concerns.
"It is better to lose the income on the days we strike than lose our jobs permanently," says Rapetsoa.
He claims that only 40% of the hawkers have been permitted to keep working in the town.
He further says that this is the only way of making a living.
"The income we make here helps us put bread on the table," he adds.
The municipality was scheduled to meet them today.
Attempts to reach the centre manager for comment are ongoing.
