Namibian earthquake reverberates in NC─── OLEBOGENG MOTSE 06:35 Mon, 28 Jun 2021
The moderate earthquake that hit Namibia’s Karas region on Sunday morning was felt by residents in parts of the Northern Cape too.
According to the Council for Geoscience in South Africa, the seismic event with a magnitude of 4,1 hit an area over 100 km away from Karasburg in Namibia just before 06:00 on Sunday morning (27 June). Despite the epicentre of the earthquake being in Namibia, retired policeman, Vataleni Fanuel Kakuiyu, says he felt the tremors inside his Keimoes home in the Northern Cape.
Kakuiyu tells OFM News the windows in the room he was in when the earthquake occurred, began buzzing, and this frightened him immensely. He says no real damage was reported on his side but he has been informed residents residing near the Augrabies Falls, felt the tremors most. The depth of the seismic event has been recorded as being 10km.
When comparing data on the Geoscience council’s website, one can see it’s the most intense earthquake recorded in the country since as far back as mid-February. This is not confirmed and was gleaned from the seismic events recorded on the website.
It comes after a 2.2-magnitude earthquake was reported in Postmasburg, in the Northern Cape in late May 2021 which frightened many. It’s not determined if residents in Postmasburg felt tremors from this latest seismic event.
