Questions after senior appointment at Sol Plaatje─── 15:50 Mon, 28 Jun 2021
The Sol Plaatje Municipality’s appointment of a new chief engineer amidst its water crisis has raised several questions.
Local media house, Find It, reports that the announcement of the appointment raised eyebrows as opposition party councillors were not aware of it.
DA councillor, Ockert Fourie, says the announcement came as a surprise. The municipality confirmed to Find It that Tebogo Maloto was appointed as the new city engineer. Fourie says his party has sent an inquiry to the acting Director of Infrastructure and Services about the appointment.
EFF MPL Aubrey Baartman says all senior management appointments are supposed to serve before the council. He says a recommendation should be done to the council and a decision on whether the appointment is endorsed or not, should then be taken.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the Sol Plaatjie Municipality, Sello Matsie, says procedures were followed, stating that the post advertised on social media platforms. Freedom Front Plus MP, Wynand Boshoff, says the manner in which Matolo was recruited may now overshadow the need for such an appointment. Baartman says the EFF is going to investigate whether procedures were followed and decide on a course of action. OFM News previously reported on infrastructure issues that Kimberley is faced with.
