AG concerned over NW municipalities─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 07:53 Fri, 02 Jul 2021
Lack of accountability and poor financial controls are a huge concern in North West municipalities.
In her latest report Tsakani Maluleke gives an indication of how municipalities in this province continue to incur irregular and fruitless expenditure. Maluleke says municipalities in the province also fail to comply with legislation as only 10 out of 22 municipalities submitted their financial statements.
She says the majority of municipalities in the province are still crippled by their earlier investment in the now liquidated VBS Mutual Bank. The majority of them have not shown much improvement - despite being under administration.
Maluleke highlighted that "there is total neglect of internal control disciplines in the province, which has caused financial and operational collapse, as well as weakened governance processes, and has resulted in a lack of accountability".
The province and its local government has for years made headlines with residents embarking on service delivery protests.
In May 2018, President Cyril Ramaphosa placed the entire province under administration.
Maluleke in her report, however, indicates how municipalities in the province are plagued by poor leadership, a lack of accountability, and poor financial health. She says they are amongst those needing intervention countrywide.
