381 arrested in FS for violation of #SAlockdown restrictions─── 16:15 Mon, 05 Jul 2021
The police in the Free State have showcased a sharp increase in arrests of suspects not complying with the alert levels 3 and 4 of the Covid-19 regulations.
The provincial spokesperson, Thandi Mbambo, says in a period of two weeks, starting from 21 June to 5 July 2021, about 381 persons were arrested. Mbambo says out of the 381, 103 suspects were brought to book for failure to be confined to a place of residence during Level 3.
“About 89 persons have already been arrested for the same offence under Level 4. In other words, they were found loitering in public and disregarding the curfew's legal requirements. Others transgressed regulations such as failure to wear a mask in a public place, sale or distribution of liquor, transportation of liquor, and failure to close an establishment during closing times,” Mbambo says.
The police urges community members to comply with the president’s call to fight the spread of Covid-19 by adhering to the Regulations. “These regulations are meant to save lives, not to create animosity between the police and community members. However, we will enforce these regulations harshly on those who do not adhere,” says the Lejweleputswa District Commissioner, Lerato Molale.
