Students at the Central University of Technology (CUT), both from the Bloemfontein and Welkom campuses in the Free State, are expected to vacate their places of residence on Wednesday following an early recess call by management.

On Tuesday, the university spokesperson, Dan Maritz, told OFM News that the university will be closing its operations due to the recent protests led by students and also to avoid the spread of Covid-19 amidst the third wave. However, students have rejected the management’s call to close the institution and labelled it as irresponsible. Students who spoke to OFM News says they’ll never vacate their residences, as planned today, and adds that they have a mechanism to stand their ground.

OFM News previously reported that on Sunday students embarked on protests over students’ allowances, the suspension of student leader Moses Ntonyane, and the disbandment of the EFF Student Command (EFFSC), which they accuse of being on management’s side and working against them.

Maritz on Tuesday explained that the recess call followed a meeting with organised labour, amongst others, and management supported the recommendation by the Covid-19 Incident Management Task Team (IMTT) for an early recess. Maritz said this means that academic activities will be suspended with effect from Wednesday 7 July 2021 at 12:00, until Friday 16 July 2021.

“We have made a call that we should ensure the safety of our students and staff by starting the recess earlier than expected. As we know, the Delta variant is continuing to spread all over the country at this point in time. And after the effect of this unfortunate incident on campus caused by our students, this holds a risk to the university to become a super-spreader and that is why we had to make this call,” he added.
