The police in the Northern Cape confirms illegal diamond miners dealt a hard blow following a crime intelligence driven operation that saw 37 suspects get arrested.
Police spokesperson, Mashay Gamieldien, says 35 men and 2 women were arrested in the Oubeep and Nuttabooi mining areas following a 2-day operation that started on Monday. They were all charged for illegal mining and five vehicles suspected to be used in the commission of the crime were impounded.
Gamieldien says 28 suspects were released on warning and are due in the Port Nolloth Periodic Court on August the 3rd while nine undocumented suspects are due in the Springbok Magistrate's Court next week Monday.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, Joey Kers, has meanwhile praised the police and warned against illegal mining, stating that "their disregard for the law will not be tolerated".
