A standoff ensued between Stallion Security officials armed with baton sticks and students of the Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State, at the Bloemfontein-based campus on Friday.

This after management ordered students to evacuate their places of residence by Friday, following the recess called this week amidst student protests. A large contingent of students gathered inside the campus in defiance of the early order by management to leave the institution.

Security officials denied OFM News access to the campus, saying they received an order to only allow students with student cards inside. OFM News previously reported that students started protesting at the campus on Sunday evening over student allowances, the reinstatement of former student leader, Moses Ntonyane, and the disbandment of the EFF Student Command-led (EFFSC) Student Representative Council (SRC).

Some students were seen tirelessly asking the security to let them in to fetch their belongings, with no success. At least 30 Stallion Security officials, armed with baton sticks, gathered at the main gate keeping a watchful eye on students inside and outside the gate. Some of the students have already left the campus whilst others decided to stay.

OFM News previously reported that student activist, Moeketsi Moeketsi, said the recess decision of the university is an irresponsible act as students may be exposed to Covid-19 as they head back home, contrary to what management thinks. He said it’s surprising that the university has chosen to mention the spread of Covid-19 as one of the reasons for the early recess whilst management failed to swiftly act when they raised the effects it had on students at the university.

Moeketsi added the decision by management to suspend classes is to demoralise students from protesting.
