NW teen lied about kidnapping─── LUCKY NKUYANE 16:48 Thu, 29 Jul 2021
There has been a dramatic turn of events on the alleged kidnapping story involving a Jouberton teenager who claimed that she was kidnapped whilst en route to school.
The police spokesperson, Adele Myburgh, tells OFM News that following this claim, the police in Jouberton have found the allegations to be false with no evidence to substantiate it. She says the police are now investigating the 15-year-old teenager for perjury after it was discovered that she lied under oath.
The teen girl in question sent voice notes to loved ones which were widely circulated throughout the community, indicating that she was kidnapped by three men driving in a black Volkswagen Polo in extension 16, en route to school on Monday. Myburgh adds that the 15-year-old will be processed in accordance with the provisions of the Child Justice Act, 2008 because she is still a minor.
“She also claimed that the alleged kidnappers sounded like they are Nigerian nationals. The teenager claimed further that she managed to escape from her alleged kidnappers by jumping out of the vehicle and ultimately opened a case of kidnapping at Jouberton Police Station,” Myburgh further adds.
Meanwhile, the Provincial Police Commissioner, Sello Kwena, has warned the community not to report false cases or make false statements under oath as this constitutes perjury, which is a criminal offence. He says the spreading of false information can also lead to destabilisation within a community. Kwena adds that members of the community need to be the eyes and ears of the police as this will save the lives of the innocent by reporting suspected criminal activities at their local police stations or calling Crime Stop: ?08600 10111
