#Covid19: NC schools experience social distancing challenges | News Article

Northern Cape MEC of Education, Zolile Monakali, has voiced his concern regarding social distancing amidst primary school learners returning to school at full capacity.

This comes after Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga, announced that primary school learners should return to school at full capacity, and other schools stating that they are unable to accommodate all learners in classes due to the Covid-19 social distancing protocol.

Monakali said that they have proposed that social distancing should be reduced to half a meter so that more learners can be accommodated.

“From all our 424 primary schools, only 79 could return to normal education and learning because of the shortages of capacities that we are experiencing in the province. The major challenge that we are faced with is the issue of social distancing, as you know that classes can only accommodate a specific number of learners. If we return all the learners in schools then we’ve got the challenge of social distancing,” said Monakali

He further said that the department is looking at various ways to get learners back to school to salvage the curriculum. However, they also don’t want to compromise the health of learners.
