This, as Monday marks Premier Job Mokgoro’s last day in office. The ANC Interim Provincial Committee (IPC) is soon expected to announce his replacement.

The party’s veteran, Bushy Maape, who also serves in the IPC structure, is the third candidate for the premiership position.

Mokgoro assumed office in June 2018 following the resignation of the embattled former Premier Supra Mahumapelo, who tendered his resignation after service delivery protesters called for his head.

Mokgoro vacates the office a few days after he made headlines over the sacking of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs MEC, Mmoloki Cwaile, whom he replaced with ANC Women's League Provincial Secretary, Lena Miga. Mokgoro’s decision to place Cwaile on special leave played out in public last week with Cwaile defying the decision, stating that he was not on special leave, contrary to what was communicated through the media. A day later, he tendered his resignation.

Whilst it remains unclear who will replace Mokgoro, it is speculated that the incoming Premier will soon reshuffle the provincial cabinet.
