NW to announce new Premier─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 05:30 Tue, 17 Aug 2021
The announcement regarding the new premier of the North West will officially be made on Tuesday.
The ANC in the province, in a statement, confirms a media briefing to announce changes in the leadership of the provincial government will be made at the Mphekwa House in Mahikeng.
OFM News on Monday reported that North West Legislature Speaker, Susana Dantjie, and current MEC for Treasury, Motlalepula Rosho, are amongst the candidates shortlisted for the Premier of the North West's position. This, as Monday marked Premier Job Mokgoro’s last day in office.
The party’s veteran, Bushy Maape, who also serves in the ANC Interim Provincial Committee (IPC) structure, is the third candidate for the premiership position.
Mokgoro assumed office in June 2018 following the resignation of the embattled former Premier Supra Mahumapelo, who tendered his resignation after service delivery protesters called for his head.
Mokgoro leaves the office a few days after he made headlines over the sacking of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs MEC, Mmoloki Cwaile, who he replaced with ANC Women's League Provincial Secretary, Lena Miga.
His initial decision to place Cwaile on special leave played out in public last week, with Cwaile defying the decision, stating that he was not on special leave, contrary to what was communicated through the media. A day later, he tendered his resignation.
Whilst it remains unclear who will replace Mokgoro, it is speculated that the incoming Premier will soon also reshuffle the provincial cabinet.
