Backlash expected for ANC IPC over Mokgoro | News Article

North West police are keeping a watchful eye outside the venue where the ANC’s Interim Provincial Committee (IPC) is set to announce its new ANC premier-elect on Monday.

Police spokesperson, Sabata Mokgabone, tells OFM News that nothing major has developed so far.

“We can confirm that the public order police in Mahikeng is currently monitoring the situation where two groups of protesters are allegedly gathering in front of the African National Congress (ANC) office. There are no incidents of violence that have been reported so far and we will continue to monitor the situation.”

Suspected ANC members are protesting against the end of the term in office for former Premier Job Mokgoro after he officialy finished his term on Sunday.

He took over from former premier Supra Mahumapelo who resigned following sporadic violent protests in Mahikeng in 2018.

OFM News previously reported that a source with a great deal of knowledge said the ruling party in the province has allegedly resolved to announce the 64-year-old IPC member and former struggle stalwart and Robben Island prisoner, Bushy Maape, as Job Mokgoro’s successor as premier.

Another source said the latter was part of the leadership of the Revolutionary Council that led the "Supra Must Fall" campaign, following the sporadic protests in Mahikeng which led to the resignation of Mahumapelo as the premier in 2018.

Three candidates, including Maape, MEC for Finance Motlalepula Rosho, and the speaker of North West Legislature Susana Dantjie, were interviewed for the premiership position.

The IPC on Tuesday morning postponed its planned media briefing to announce the province's new premier at 13:00 on Tuesday afternoon.
