The North West ANC's Interim Provincial Committee (IPC) has indicated that the province's capital city of Mahikeng does not resemble the model of a capital city.

The IPC's coordinator, Hlomani Chauke, explained that service delivery, road, and infrastructure are in a state of decay. He said this during a press briefing held at Mahikeng during the announcement of the ANC's premier-elect, Bushy Maape. Chauke replaces incumbent Job Mokgoro, who took the reigns in 2018. Chauke has once again taken a swipe at ANC councillors and accused them of placing their interests and needs before the electorates. He says ANC councillors failed to deliver to residents across the province and most of the municipalities in the province are in a state of disarray.

“Our concern, I think, about the province is the state of municipalities because we cannot be proud of a single municipality in the North West. Our people do not have water, no roads, no housing and young people who are unemployed end up taking drugs. The majority of these young people are mobilised by certain individuals with their own interests, we now know that. These are young people who are supposed be at work, supposed to be at school but they get abused by certain individuals who use them,” he adds.

In 2018, residents embarked on sporadic, violent protests over a lack of service delivery, and they also called for the resignation of former Premier Supra Mahumapelo.

On Tuesday, Chauke announced that Mokgoro would be leaving his position as the premier and mentioned under his leadership more municipalities were in trouble and failed to do what the ruling party had asked of them.

“So, we need to intervene at that level because we cannot sit back and have a leader at the government that has sort of lost it at a level of having to implement what the ANC says we must do. Now, you needed a leader that must work very closely with municipalities, to help them. Most of these municipalities that have collapsed are meant to provide these services that I am talking about and are meant to implement the manifesto of the African National Congress (ANC) and they are not doing it because they don’t even have anyone that helps with the support of the provincial government. As we speak, it is the people of the North West that are suffering and the ANC cannot sit back and say because we are going to be seen creating instability in the leadership, therefore, we cannot intervene. We have to intervene and this intervention is what the ANC is doing,” Chauke further adds.
