NW premier candidate sworn in as MPL─── LUCKY NKUYANE 06:03 Thu, 02 Sep 2021
The North West premier candidate, Bushy Maape, says he has been called to serve the people - but says he will not serve alone.
This after he was on Wednesday sworn in as the Member of the Provincial Legislature (MPL) by the Speaker, Susana Dantjie. He is now expected to be voted in as the Premier on Tuesday 7 September, after the debate in the Provincial Legislature.
The communication manager at the Legislature, Sethunya Kgafela, told OFM News that if Maape is elected as the new premier he will be sworn in by the North West President Judge. The swearing in of Maape comes few days after former premier, Job Mokgoro, resigned in a controversial manner following a fallout between him and the ANC's Interim Provincial Committee.
Maape's name was gazetted on Tuesday, prior to his swearing-in as MPL on Wednesday. Currently, the MEC for Finance, Motlalepula Rosho, is acting as premier, following Mokgoro's resignation.
In August, the ANC's Interim Provincial Committee (IPC) announced Maape as premier-elect after Mokgoro's term in office had expired. Maape is a former struggle stalwart, Robben Island prisoner, and also an IPC member.
He replaces Mokgoro at a time when most municipalities in the province are in financial distress and dysfunctional.
