NW to elect new premier─── LUCKY NKUYANE 06:20 Tue, 07 Sep 2021
The North West Provincial Legislature is on Tuesday set to elect the new premier, with ANC candidate Bushy Maape likely to be elected.
Members of the Provincial Legislature (MPLs) are set to first vigorously debate the election of the new premier.
This after Maape was sworn in as an MPL last week - a few days after the former premier, Job Mokgoro, resigned both as premier and MPL. Mokgoro resigned after a fallout with the ANC's Interim Provincial Committee (IPC) who had earlier suspended his ANC membership for defying the party.
The communication manager at the Legislature, Sethunya Kgafela, previously told OFM News that if Maape is elected as the new premier he will be sworn in by the North West President Judge.
Maape's name was gazetted last week Tuesday, before his swearing-in as MPL on Wednesday. Currently, the MEC for Finance, Motlalepula Rosho, is acting as premier following Mokgoro's resignation.
In August, the ANC's IPC announced Maape as premier-elect after Mokgoro's term in office had expired. Maape is a former struggle stalwart, Robben Island prisoner, and also an IPC member.
He is to replace Mokgoro at a time when most municipalities in the province are in financial distress and dysfunctional.
