Gauteng government blamed for child's death because of uncovered manhole─── 08:57 Thu, 09 Sep 2021
Some Vaal residents blame the Gauteng Government for the uncovered sewer manhole that led to the death of a six-year-old at Orange farm.
The six-year-old Khomanani Mawa's body was retrieved from flowing sewer water on Wednesday in Evaton, after he allegedly fell into a sewer manhole while playing at Orange farm on Sunday.
Just last month, the body of a 9-year-old girl was discovered in an open manhole at the Sebokeng hostel, leading unhappy residents to blame the provincial government, as many manholes remain uncovered.
After Wednesday's search and discovery, one of the Mawa family members who spoke on condition of anonymity, elaborated it was no accident, adding the six-year-old was pushed into the manhole.
The Gauteng government emphasised the iron lid that covers the manhole was stolen as they are being sold at scrapyards.
The Emfuleni Local Municipality's mayor, Gift Moarane, was at the scene and has expressed his heartfelt condolences to the Mawa family.
