The operational manager of the Free State Umbrella Fire Protection Association and the incident commander for the Northern Cape wildfire response group, Jan de Villiers, said that conditions have been favourable for the start of wildfires in the province, especially in Kathu, where the association is currently camping.

De Villiers said that various wildfires erupted in the Northern Cape during the week as a result of favourable weather, however, they managed to deal with fires after they were called in to assist by Northern Cape local structures.

He further said that there has been some structural damage in the Kgalagadi area, even though land owners have managed to deal with the fires.

De Villiers reiterated that the task team is on standby and monitoring fires in that area.
