The Minister of Home Affairs, Aaron Motsoaledi, has announced the department's state of readiness in the preparation for the Local Government Elections (LGE).
Motsoaledi has announced that the department's offices will be opened across the North West, Free State and Northern Cape, as well as in other provinces across the country. He says 18 offices in the North West will be open, 21 in the Free State, and 16 in the Northern Cape.
These offices will be open with generators as back-ups, and mobile offices. Commercial banks are also set to offer much-needed assistance to the department by opening their doors for Identity Document (ID) collections.
The municipal elections are scheduled for 1 November 2021, with these offices set to be open this weekend, 18 - 19 September, which the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) declared as the voter registration weekend.
The stations will be open from 08:00 to 17:00. The IEC in the Free State has announced its state of readiness. It says it will have 1 564 stations open this weekend to conduct voter registrations.
"To prepare for this event the IEC has recruited and trained 3 128 registration officials, as the station will be manned by 2 officials, and 375 area managers will troubleshoot issues during the weekend.
"The commission also announced the use of a new voter management device which will enhanced voter registration and those who will be updating their details," the IEC says. The portable device also has the ability to capture an address during registration and to verify the address against ward boundaries.
