Suspected scammer to reappear in court | News Article

The case against the 45-year-old James Modau has been postponed following his appearance on Wednesday morning before the Rustenburg Magistrate’s court.

This is according to North West Hawks spokesperson, Tlangelani Rikhotso, who says Modau’s appearance follows his arrest for allegedly running an investment scam worth approximately R1.5 million in Rustenburg. Rikhotso says Modau was released on R3000 bail and the matter was postponed to 8 November 2021 for further investigation.

“Modau was arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit this past Tuesday. It’s alleged that in 2014, the suspect lured investors into investing money in a company called Green Fields, by promising them returns of 100 percent profit at the end of the investment term. The investors allegedly deposited the funds into his personal bank account, only for the company to vanish without a trace before paying out the funds and dividends, as promised,” Rikhotso says.

Investigations got underway and the suspect was traced in Gauteng and subsequently arrested. Rikhotso says Modau will face 38 charges of fraud and money laundering.
