Thabanchu was yesterday sworn in as the new mayor to replace Maitu Kgaile, who passed away in July due to Covid-19 related complications.

The South African national civil organizations (SANCO) in Matlosana says the appointment has been long overdue.

Sanco spokesperson Lucky Mundlovu told OFM News that they supported Thabanchu as she has a vast experience in politics.

Thabanchu previously served as the Speaker of Matlosana, during China Dodovu’s time as mayor.

North West ANCWL acting secretary, Bitsa Lekonkopane, said they are clear in the call for women to lead, and that they will give her all the necessary support.

Lekonkopane says it makes the league happy to see that women are considered for such roles, that makes a difference in society.

OFM news also spoke to an ANC member who previously held a key role within the party, who asked to remain anonymous.

The member said Thabanchu’s appointment was a waste of time and money, citing that a month would not be enough for Thabanchu to bring any changes nor stability to Matlosana.

DA councillor in Matlosana, Elmarie Postma, said as long as the appointment serves the best interests of the people of Matlosana and not individuals, they are in support of the new mayor.
