UFS students march over student deaths #JusticeForLitemba─── OLEBOGENG MOTSE 13:06 Sat, 02 Oct 2021
The issue of safety of students at the University of the Free State (UFS) is again under scrutiny.
This as a select group of students peacefully march today in Bloemfontein in solidarity with UFS students who lost their lives this year. Amongst those being honoured is 23-year-old, Litemba Mpambani, a fourth year fine art student at the UFS who was fatally hit by a speeding motorist just outside the main gate of the UFS’ Bloemfontein campus on 24 April 2021.
Whilst police have identified the model of the car that hit and killed the promising artist from Gqeberha, no other leads have been made with respect to tracking down the culprit. Litemba’s mother Zanele came to Bloemfontein this weekend to take part in the demonstration. She tells OFM News she is concerned that no real progress has been made in apprehending the culprit that killed her daughter
The grieving mother says the Mangaung Metro municipality’s cameras were not operating on the night her child was killed and the UFS’ cameras do not reach the place where she was killed just outside the campus in Nelson Mandela Drive and as a result the number plate of the motorist cannot be identified. “So my child’s killer is still at large” says an inconsolable Zanele to OFM News.
As a result the marching group is moving towards the city hall and then Park Road police station where they will hand over a memorandum of demands.
The recent post-mortem results into the accident shows that 23-year-old Litemba died from a blunt force head injury on the top left side of her head. She was declared dead on the scene by paramedics at 22:10 pm, which is 10 minutes after the estimated time of the fatal accident in April. The police have since requested anyone who might have witnessed how the accident happened or know who the driver of the black sedan was, to call Sergeant Thabo Litsoane at 079-606-7820.
The march comes after a group of UFS Qwaqwa students were killed in a robbery gone wrong at their residence in Botjabela Village last week.
