This after OFM News had reported that the ANC’s Interim Provincial Committee (IPC) in the Free State had suspended the former mayor of the cash-strapped Maluti-a-Phofung Local Municipality and Chief Whip in the Provincial Legislature, Vusi Tshabalala, after he was accused of supporting independent candidates for the upcoming elections.

The Free State SACP spokesperson, Phillip Kganyakgo, says they have welcomed the decision taken by the leadership of the ANC in the province, as the allegations against Tshabalala are serious and require immediate attention from the ANC leadership in the province.

“We’ve always been raising concerns about this specific individual since he was still mayor of Maluti-a-Phofung, which is really in chaos and has been paralysed under his watch as a mayor there. So we had a problem around his elevation to become Chief Whip of the ANC, and now we are happy that at least the leadership of the ANC is giving attention to the suspected conduct that relates to him; and we hope that they can get to the bottom of it,” he said.

Meanwhile, OFM News also reported in 2018 that 16 ANC councillors voted with opposition parties to remove Tshabalala in a motion of no confidence after accusing him of corruption. Some of these councillors were later expelled by the ANC.
