Curro Bloemfontein Open Day | News Article

Curro Independent School Bloemfontein is where high-performing and self-confident leaders are made. The school is situated in Curro Crescent, in the scenic suburb of Groenvlei, on the outskirts of the city.

This Saturday, 16 October 2021, Curro hosts their open day from 08:00 to 12:00.

During the open day, parents and future learners are welcome to come and experience the Curro culture, as well as:

  • be educated on the curriculum and see what sets Curro Bloemfontein apart from others schools in the community,
  • have the opportunity to take a school tour and see the beautiful facility, and
  • get to meet the teachers and ask questions.

Curro provides high-quality education for learners from age 4 to Grade 12. Their dedicated teachers and well-rounded approach prepare learners for the IEB examinations at the end of Grade 12. With small class sizes, dedicated teachers and an enhanced curriculum focusing on STEAMD, they empower learners with 21st-century skills and knowledge.

Curro’s foundation phase from age 4 to Grade 3 starts by providing the emotional and intellectual foundation required to handle formal learning that starts in Grade 1. They then gradually develop learners’ skills and knowledge in basic areas such as language (comprehension, speaking and listening), mathematics (counting and understanding numbers) and creative problem-solving.

In the intermediate phase (grades 4 – 7), learners are led into more abstract thought and independent work. Their small class sizes and dedicated teachers prepare them for high school by teaching them how to apply the 21st-century skills and concepts they have learned.

As a Curro School, they also promote creativity and critical thinking by encouraging children to make their own choices within well-established boundaries. Their enhanced curriculum includes specialised subjects such as Information Technology and Robotics. Learners in this phase may use tablets in class to enhance their learning experience, and learners have the choice between Afrikaans or Sesotho as an additional language.

The FET phase prepares learners for the IEB examinations written at the end of Grade 12. However, they emphasise a greater world-readiness rather than a purely examinations-driven approach. Their learners are taught to think innovatively, express their ideas and take charge of their own lives.

Furthermore, as a Curro School, 21st-century learning is implemented in all subjects, including specialised subjects such as Information Technology and Engineering Graphics and Design (EGD).

Curro believes that participation in sports and cultural activities plays an important role in developing a well-rounded learner and promoting friendship, team-awareness and self-confidence. Their extramural activities are offered by private tutors or coaches, at an additional cost.

Curro is a Christian-based educational institute and promotes and fosters positive values and norms. Mutual understanding and respect for educators, parents and learners are our core values. Conflict management, decision-making and time management are also regarded as priorities in their life skills and value-added programmes.

A school transport service is available to learners travelling to and from the school, at an additional cost. The northern route has pick-up points at Northridge Mall, Bayswater, Westdene, Dan Pienaar, Wild Olive and Pentagon Park. The southern route has pick-up points at Fleurdal, Lourier Park, Leppissier Park, Fichardt Park, Gardenia Park, Hospital Park and Langenhoven Park.

Curro’s drone programme introduces learners to basic coding and programming principles, as well as more advanced 21st-century skills, such as web development, data analysis and scientific computing.

As part of Curro’s enhanced curriculum, they implement hybrid learning on a regular basis and accommodate learners who prefer to learn from home during the COVID-19 pandemic. Assessments, tests and examinations are conducted on a secure online site supported by IEB, and attendance and marks are taken via MS Teams.

Curro’s aftercare service is available for learners aged 4 to Grade 7 at an additional cost. Learners are accommodated in safe classrooms and playgrounds, and the fees include a freshly prepared meal for lunch as well as limited homework support.
