Ramaphosa rally in Bfn coincidental, says analyst─── LUCKY NKUYANE 08:36 Tue, 19 Oct 2021
Monday's ANC election campaign in Mangaung, led by ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa, might not have been planned deliberately to coincide with Ace Magashule's court appearance, says a political analyst of the University of the Free State (UFS).
Sethulego Matebesi says he is not convinced that this has been deliberate.
His remarks follow talks amongst Magashule supporters that the ANC campaign, led by ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa in the Free State, including Bloemfontein and Phuthaditjhaba, was to woo Magashule supporters.
Matebesi says the fact of the matter is that suspended Magashule, who is charged alongside 15 suspects in the R255million failed asbestos case, is still a member of the ANC. He says despite this fact, it's well-known that things are not normal within the ANC. Matebesi says many others, especially Magashule supporters, might see Ramaphosa's campaign in Bochabela in Bloemfontein as an attack on Magashule.
Magashule was suspended from his position as Secretary-General (SG) following the asbestos case charges against him.
OFM News previously reported that hundreds of supporters of the suspended SG are expected to descend on Bloemfontein from different provinces to support him during the continuation of his trial at the Free State High Court today. Magashule, former Mangaung Mayor Olly Mlamleli, businessman Edwin Sodi, and others face more than 70 charges of fraud, theft, and corruption over the failed R255 million asbestos project. Magashule's supporters - like former Dr Kenneth Kaunda Region Secretary, Lopang Rothman - have always maintained that his arrest was linked to his suspension from the ANC. Rothman says it is very clear that the agenda is to do away with Magashule's political career through the courts.
