The ANC Women’s League (ANCWL) in the North West says the constant snubbing of former MEC, Wendy Nelson, to various deployments is a patriarchal and sexist treatment tendency.

This comes a day after Nelson, who was previously charged with fraud linking former provincial HOD of Health, Dr Thabo Lekalakala, was acquitted in the North West High Court. THE ANCWL’s provincial spokesperson, Bitsa Lenkopane, says Nelson was denied deployment opportunities countless of times, pushed aside and every time replaced by a man because of the "non-existent charges".

Lenkopane says the Women’s League believe that there will be a different but correct decision taken against Nelson going forward. Nelson was charged after it was alleged that she had knowledge of Lekalakala’s misrepresentation on the job application form (Z83) but went on to recommend him for this senior position to the then premier Supra Mahumapelo.

In August 2019, Nelson was arrested by the Hawks and she was released on R20 000 bail that same day.

“In the just concluded Local Government Elections, female members of the ANC were deprived legitimate participation in organisational and deployment processes, though they were properly elected by the structures. Cde Wendy, just like all these members, were legitimately next to [be appointed at] the North West Provincial Legislature as an ANC member but was always pushed aside. The ANC Women’s League has full confidence in the ANC processes, and believe there will be correct decisions when implementing its resolutions, including the step aside rule,” she adds.

The IPC was heavily criticised for asking ANC members such Nelson, and former Potchefstroom-based JB Marks Mayor Kgotso Khumalo, among others, to step aside. Party members were of the view that this was a factional move. They argued that other members of the ANC who are at the helm of provincial government departments such as Susan Dantjie, former Cogta MEC, Motlalepula Rosho and others have also been accusations levelled against them.

But questioned about accusations levelled against the speaker of the provincial legislature, Susana Dantjie, former Cogta MEC Motlalepula Rosho and others, Chauke previously told OFM News that these matters involving the said members are not in the courts yet but are still matters of ongoing investigations.

In April 2021, ANC IPC spokesperson, Kenny Morolong, told OFM News that a total of five ANC members charged with alleged criminal activities in the province were affected by the ANC step-aside resolution.

Morolong said these included members of Dr Kenneth Kaunda (DRKK) and Ngaka Modiri Molema Districts. They included Khumalo and Nelson, along with a Matlosana Councillor accused of rape.
