The Transport Minister, Fikile Mbalula, is set to launch the Festive Season Road Safety awareness campaign in Bloemfontein on Monday.

The launch comes as the N1 road in particular, which runs through the province, continues to experience road carnage which has resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries.

OFM News reported on Friday that a truck driver lost his life following a collision between two trucks on the notorious N1 road. According to a statement from Mbalula's office, the festive season road safety campaign aims to prioritise and promote safer road usage during the high peak season on South African roads.

The launch will take place at the Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium in Rocklands in Bloemfontein.

The statement adds that the objective of the campaign is to ensure a smooth flow of traffic, but also to prevent negligent and reckless driving which could result in accidents.

"The road safety launch is a collaboration between different levels of government, transport entities led by CEOs, private sector and NGOs stakeholders. The festive season in South Africa is associated with industry closure, increased traffic volumes and increased road deaths. The large proportion of victims is usually pedestrians, passengers due to lack of use of safety belts and jaywalking by pedestrians," the statement further adds.

OFM News previously reported that various emergency services came together on Friday morning at the Shell Ultra City Pitstop, next to the N1 in Bloemfontein, to launch a safer festive season initiative.

Various government departments, and public as well as private emergency services, commemorated 21 years since the initiative was started in 2000.
