The video also claims the car was bought for cash.

Municipal spokesman Thabo Kessah says the official vehicles of both the previous mayor and the speaker are currently under assessment and a decision on their roadworthiness is awaited pending the assessment.

"As per the cost containment regulations (instituted in 2019) there's a capped or maximum amount at which such vehicles may be purchased, and the amount mentioned on the video clip is almost 3-4 times higher than the regulated amount. The vehicles both the mayor and the speaker are currently using are hired, and their short-term contracts end this week".

Kessah further says the clip is aimed at causing unnecessary confusion and needs to be condemned in the strongest possible way.

"We appeal with the maker of the clip to recall it, and desist from such acts" Kessah concluded.
