Five Potchefstroom homes are reportedly damaged by localised flooding witnessed in the area this past Sunday.

Spokesperson for the JB Marks Local Municipality under which Potchefstroom falls, Willy Maphosa, says the five damaged family homes are located in the Ikageng and Promosa townships.

The damages range from water that breached the homes to roofs that caved in from the sheer force of the flash floods.

Maphosa says JB Marks is looking into how they can assist the affected families via the supply of blankets or temporary accommodation in cases where the damage where severe.

Maphosa calls on residents severely affected by the localised flooding to contact the JB Marks Disaster Management Call Centre for assistance.

Meanwhile, mop-up operations are underway and water has subsided in areas identified as hotspots.

On Sunday afternoon, motorists travelling along the N12 between Potchefstroom and Klerksdorp were encouraged to exercise extreme caution on the road owing to the heavy rains.

The rains saw the bridge between Promosa and Ikageng being temporarily closed.

According to Maphosa, a bakkie ended up being trapped between Promosa and Mohadin, however the occupants of the vehicle were evacuated and did not sustain any injuries.
