Nurses and doctors in the North West assisted a mom who gave birth to quadruplets. This is according to the Department of Health's Tebogo Lekgethwane.

He says the babies were born at the Joe Morolong Memorial Hospital in the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati Health District. Three of the quadruplets are boys and one is a baby girl. Lekgethwane adds that the Health MEC Madoda Sambatha has congratulated both the nurses and doctors who delivered the babies as well as the mother and her family.

"All the [babies have a reasonable] weight, as anticipated by the team. Of the four newborns, three are boys (quad 1, 2, and 4) and one is a girl (quad 3). Currently, all the boys are being fed whilst the girl is closely monitored on ventilation in the Intensive Care Unit. This after the doctors discovered that she has apneic attacks and she was given a blood transfusion," Sambatha says.

“Well done to our doctors and nurses for a successful operation that delivered the babies, and more importantly, congratulations to the mother who gave birth to these quadruplets. According to experts, quadruplets are formed when a single fertilised egg splits into four different embryos (these are known as monozygotic quadruplets) and they are genetically identical quadruplets. Four eggs are then released and are each fertilised by different sperm," he adds.

Sambatha aludes that the mother who gave birth to the quadruplets was booked to attend the Antenatal Care Programme at the Coleridge Clinic and was later referred to the Joe Morolong Memorial Hospital where a successful operation was undertaken by the well-experienced medical team.
